What is children & family dentistry

What is children & family dentistry?

Pediatric dentistry (pedodontics) is the specialty that protects and treats the health of primary and permanent teeth — from infancy through adolescence — using methods tailored to a child's development and psychology. The family dentistry approach extends this to parents as well: check-ups, preventive care, and treatments for every family member are planned together at the same clinic.

The core of this approach is prevention over treatment. Regular check-ups, preventive applications such as fluoride and fissure sealants, and early diagnosis catch cavities and gum problems before they grow; children come to know their dentist through habit, not pain.

When should my child have their first dental visit?

The ideal time for a first exam is shortly after the first primary tooth erupts. An early introduction both catches any potential issues before they start and helps the child get comfortable in the clinic through play, without fear.

Primary teeth will fall out anyway — is treatment really necessary?

Yes, it is. Primary teeth serve critical roles in chewing, speech, and holding space for permanent teeth. A primary tooth lost too early or left with decay directly affects the position and health of the permanent tooth developing beneath it.

What sets pediatric dentistry apart from regular dental treatment?

Technique and communication. Children's appointments progress in short, gradual steps using the tell-show-do approach; the goal is not just to treat the tooth, but to help the child build a positive, lifelong relationship with dental care.

Advantages

Advantages of family-centered dentistry

Having the whole family monitored at the same clinic — with prevention as the priority — simplifies both dental health management and the logistics of care.

Prevention before treatment

Fluoride, fissure sealants, and regular check-ups stop cavities before they form, heading off the need for more extensive treatment down the road.

Early diagnosis

Crowding, decay, and gum problems are caught at an early stage through routine monitoring, making treatment shorter and more comfortable.

No dental anxiety

Thanks to child-friendly communication and gradual familiarization, children come to the clinic as part of a familiar routine — not because of pain.

The whole family under one roof

A child's check-up, a parent's gum treatment, and a night guard fitting are all planned at the same clinic, with appointments scheduled to fit the family's routine.

Who it's for

Who are these treatments suitable for?

From infancy to adulthood, preventive or therapeutic care is planned for every family member according to their individual needs.

Children in the primary-tooth stage

First exams, cavity checks, fluoride applications, and primary-tooth treatments are provided under pedodontic care; baby-bottle tooth decay and pacifier habits are also assessed during this period.

School-age children and adolescents

Newly erupted permanent molars are most vulnerable to decay at this stage; fissure sealants protect these teeth. Signs of crowding are also detected early and addressed at these ages.

Adults with gum problems

For complaints of bleeding, recession, and sensitivity, periodontology (gum treatment) is applied; care is planned as needed, from scaling to deep curettage.

Teeth clenching and grinding (bruxism)

If you experience morning jaw pain, headaches, or notice tooth wear, a custom-made night guard protects your teeth and jaw joint; the underlying cause of the tension is evaluated during the examination.

Treatments

Children & family dentistry treatments

Four main categories spanning preventive applications to active treatment, tailored by age and need.

Pediatric DentistryExclusively for children

Examination, filling, and treatment of primary and young permanent teeth — carried out with a patient, fear-free approach suited to the child's development. Regular follow-up from the first tooth through adolescence is fundamental.

Fluoride & Fissure SealantsPreventive treatment

Fluoride strengthens enamel and builds resistance to decay; fissure sealants seal the deep grooves of molars with a thin protective coating. Both are painless and completed within minutes.

Gum TreatmentPeriodontology

Gum bleeding, recession, and inflammation are brought under control through scaling, root planing, and advanced periodontal therapy as needed. Healthy gums extend the life of your teeth.

Night GuardBruxism protection

A thin, transparent custom-fitted guard that prevents the wear, fractures, and jaw-joint pain caused by clenching and grinding. It separates the teeth during sleep, distributing pressure evenly.

Process

How does the process work at the clinic?

A comfortable, four-step journey for the whole family — from first exam to ongoing care.

Introduction & examination

Your child gets acquainted with the clinic through play; the teeth and gum health of every family member are examined, supported by X-rays where needed.

Personalized plan

Preventive and treatment needs are identified for each family member; priorities and an appointment schedule are established together.

Preventive care & treatment

Fluoride, fissure sealants, fillings, gum treatment, or a night guard — completed in age-appropriate, short, and comfortable appointments.

Regular check-ups

Twice-yearly visits keep teeth on track; children's development and adults' gum health are monitored consistently.

Home care

What should the whole family watch at home?

The protection achieved in the clinic is only lasting when supported by daily habits at home.

Brush twice a day

For children, brush under parental supervision with an age-appropriate toothbrush and toothpaste; turning brushing into a game in the early years makes the habit stick.

Limit sugary snacking

Frequent sugar consumption is the leading cause of cavities; sugary drinks and sweetened bottles should especially not be given before bedtime.

Floss and clean between teeth

The spaces a toothbrush can't reach should be cleaned with dental floss; for adults, this should be part of the daily routine for healthy gums.

Don't skip check-ups

Even without any complaints, a twice-yearly check-up catches problems early; for children, it turns clinic visits into a natural, comfortable routine.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about children & family dentistry

My child is afraid of the dentist — what should I do?
We schedule the first appointment for introductions, not treatment. The child gets to know the clinic, the chair, and the dentist through play; procedures progress gradually using the tell-show-do method. At home, it's equally important not to mention the dentist with threats or frightening language.
Is fluoride treatment safe?
Yes. Fluoride applied in the clinic by a dentist at an age-appropriate dose is safe and significantly reduces the risk of cavities by strengthening enamel. The application is painless and takes just a few minutes; the frequency is determined by the dentist based on the child's individual cavity risk.
What is a fissure sealant, and how long does it last?
It is a thin, flowable protective filling that seals the deep grooves on the chewing surfaces of molars. It is applied to newly erupted permanent molars, is painless, and requires no removal of tooth structure. Its integrity is monitored at regular check-ups and can easily be refreshed if needed.
Is gum bleeding normal?
No. Regular bleeding when brushing is one of the earliest signs of gum inflammation (gingivitis) and should not be expected to resolve on its own. When caught early, scaling and proper oral hygiene are usually sufficient; if neglected, the condition can progress to tooth loss.
Who needs a night guard?
A night guard is recommended for patients who clench or grind their teeth during sleep, wake up with jaw or head pain in the morning, or notice wear on their teeth. It is custom-made from an impression and protects the teeth, restorations, and jaw joint from excessive pressure.
Can the whole family be seen on the same day?
Yes. We can schedule your appointments on the same day in consecutive slots to fit your family's routine. Because we are open until late every day, it is easy to find times that work around school and work hours; after the exam, each family member receives their own individual follow-up plan.

The first step toward your family's smile: an exam.
