What is smile design

What is smile design?

Smile design is a personalised aesthetic treatment process in which the size, shape, colour and alignment of your teeth are planned as a whole — together with your lip line and gum level — relative to your entire face. It is not a single procedure but a holistic plan that combines multiple treatments according to your needs.

At ÖzbuDent, this planning is carried out using the Digital Smile Design (DSD) approach: your new smile is designed on a computer using facial and intraoral photographs along with digital measurements, shown to you in the mouth as a trial (mock-up), and no permanent work begins until you give your approval.

Is it the same as Hollywood Smile?

Hollywood Smile is the popular name for smile design; it generally refers to the comprehensive renewal of the front teeth with veneers or crowns. The goal is not an artificial whiteness but a natural and balanced smile that truly suits your face.

What does Digital Smile Design (DSD) provide?

Using photographs and digital measurements, your new smile is designed before treatment starts and shown to you as a temporary trial in your mouth. Because you see the result in advance there are no surprises; the design is revised according to your preferences.

Is it a single treatment?

No. Smile design is a planning framework; procedures such as teeth whitening, veneers, crowns, gum contouring, or replacement of missing teeth are combined within this plan according to your needs. Which procedures are required is determined at the examination.

Advantages

Advantages of smile design

Rather than piecemeal aesthetic procedures, you get a harmonious, predictable result planned around your whole face.

You see the result in advance

Thanks to digital design and an intraoral trial (mock-up), you see your new smile before any permanent work is done and can communicate any changes you wish.

Planning tailored to your face

Tooth shape and colour are determined with your facial contours, lip line and skin tone taken into account. A design unique to you is applied — not an off-the-shelf template.

Holistic and balanced outcome

Because tooth colour, alignment and gum level are addressed in a single plan, the result is more harmonious and natural than procedures carried out separately.

One plan, a coordinated process

All required procedures are sequenced within a single treatment plan; the number of appointments and total duration are clarified from the outset, and the process advances under your dentist's coordination.

Who is it for

Who is smile design suitable for?

It can be applied to adults who are dissatisfied with the colour, shape or alignment of their smile and whose dental and gum health can be brought to a suitable level with treatment.

Colour and shape concerns

For stained, worn, short-looking or misshapen teeth, smile design combines whitening, veneers and crowns in a single plan to deliver comprehensive renewal.

Gaps and mild crowding

Spaces between teeth (diastema) and mild alignment issues can often be corrected within the design using veneers or crowns; for more severe crowding, orthodontic correction may be recommended first.

Gum appearance (gummy smile)

Excessive gum show when smiling or asymmetric gum levels are balanced with a gum contouring procedure (pink aesthetics) added to the design plan; the teeth become visible in the right proportion.

For whom is it not suitable?

If there is active gum disease, untreated cavities or extensive tooth-structure loss, the aesthetic phase is postponed; oral health is first brought to a suitable level through treatment. Comprehensive smile design is deferred in younger patients whose jaw development is not yet complete.

Treatments included

What procedures does smile design include?

Which procedures enter your design plan is determined together based on the current condition of your teeth, your expectations and the examination findings.

Teeth WhiteningColour foundation

It establishes the colour foundation of the design. Natural teeth are lightened to the target shade; the colour of veneers and crowns is then chosen to match this new shade for overall harmony.

Porcelain Veneer (Leaf Veneer)Minimal preparation

Thin porcelain leaves applied to the visible surface of the front teeth correct shape, length and colour. They are the most frequently used component of Hollywood Smile treatments.

Zirconium / Full-Ceramic CrownComprehensive correction

For teeth with significant structure loss, existing fillings or severely altered shape, aesthetic crowns that cover the entire tooth provide both durability and a natural appearance.

Gum Aesthetics and Complementary ProceduresPink aesthetics

Gum level contouring (gummy smile correction), replacement of missing teeth with dental implants, or minor alignment corrections are added to the plan when needed.

Treatment process

How is smile design performed?

A planned four-step journey from digital analysis to your permanent smile — with your approval sought at every stage.

Examination and digital analysis

Your dental and gum health is assessed; facial and smile photographs and digital measurements are taken, and your expectations are listened to.

Design and preview

Your new smile is designed on a computer and shown to you as a temporary trial (mock-up) in your mouth; it is revised according to your preferences.

Treatment sessions

The procedures planned according to the approved design (whitening, veneers, crowns, gum contouring, etc.) are carried out in sequence.

Final adjustment and check-up

Bite, speech and aesthetics are checked one final time; aftercare recommendations and your regular check-up schedule are provided.

Aftercare and longevity

What should you keep in mind after smile design?

With proper care, veneers and crowns retain their appearance for many years; the key to longevity lies in your daily habits.

Long-lasting results

Well-maintained porcelain veneers and crowns can last an average of 10–15 years without problems; porcelain surfaces are more resistant to staining than natural enamel.

Regular oral hygiene

Brushing twice a day, using dental floss or interdental brushes, and regular scale-and-polish appointments protect both the restorations and the gums.

Avoid putting stress on teeth

Avoid habits such as cracking hard-shelled nuts or biting pens; if you grind your teeth, use the night guard your dentist recommends.

Regular check-ups

Six-monthly check-ups monitor the fit of the restorations and gum health, so that small issues are addressed before they grow.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about smile design

What is smile design?
Smile design is a comprehensive aesthetic treatment process in which the colour, shape, alignment and gum level of the teeth are replanned in a personalised way to harmonise with your facial features. It is also known as Hollywood Smile. It is not a single procedure but a holistic plan that combines multiple treatments according to need.
What procedures does smile design include?
Depending on the plan, procedures such as teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, zirconium or full-ceramic crowns, gum contouring (pink aesthetics) and, where needed, replacement of missing teeth with dental implants are brought together. Which procedures are required is determined through examination and digital analysis.
Can I see my new smile in advance?
Yes. Thanks to digital smile design, your new smile is first designed on a computer, then shown to you as a temporary trial (mock-up) in your mouth. Any aspects of the design you are not happy with are revised; no permanent work begins until you have given your approval.
How long does smile design take?
Depending on the scope of the plan, most cases are completed in 2–4 weeks over a few appointments. Plans involving only whitening and veneers tend to be shorter; cases requiring dental implants or orthodontic correction may take longer. An exact timeline is established at the examination.
Is smile design permanent?
Yes — with proper care it lasts for many years. Well-maintained porcelain veneers and crowns can be used for an average of 10–15 years. Regular oral hygiene, six-monthly check-ups, and avoiding habits that put excessive stress on the teeth are the main factors determining longevity.
How much does smile design cost?
The cost is personalised according to the procedures included in the plan (whitening, veneers, crowns, gum contouring, etc.) and the number of teeth involved — it varies by case. Please book a consultation at ÖzbuDent for a specific quote.
